Many Catholic bloggers have a “donate” button on their web sites, encouraging readers to make a donation if they find their blog useful. I certainly don’t begrudge them that. Most bloggers don’t make any money at it, and if people are benefiting from their work, they should be encouraged to offer some small compensation for that.

I’m not going to go that route, for various reasons. But if you’d like to support what I do, here are some wonderful ways to do it.

Donate to Catholic Campus Ministry!

I am employed in full time campus ministry by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte. We are largely funded through the Diocesan Support Appeal, but campus ministers must still raise over $100K annually to meet out budget. Donating to Catholic Campus Ministry not only helps me serve the students at Western Carolina University, but also makes campus ministry possible on many other campuses in our diocese. Thank you!

Buy something from me!

I can’t afford to house and feed a wife and six children on a campus minister’s salary! So to supplement our income, we also run a business called New House Highland. We do quite a bit under that banner. I make traditional Scottish kilts: that’s how the business began, but it has grown from there. I’m unable to spend a lot of time making kilts these days, so I’m not currently accepting orders for those. However, I also import and sell Scottish kilt socks on Amazon.com.

In case you haven’t noticed, I have a pretty amazing beard, and I keep it looking amazing with hand made beard care products which my wife and I produce. I make beard oils, balms and waxes. She makes the soaps and shampoos. And we import high quality combs and brushes from the UK. We sell these under the name St. Kilda Beard Care. Even if you aren’t bearded, you may still enjoy the soaps and other items.

My wife is also an avid knitter. Currently you can find her knit caps on the St. Kilda Beard Care site (knit caps being a wonderful complement to a beard), and she and a friend together have an Etsy Shop, Blue Ridge Purl, where they sell all sorts of knit items including gloves, shawls, caps, cowls, and more.

You can also request commission work from her via her web site.

Whether is it kilt hose, beard balms, or hand knits, buying from us helps to supplement our family’s income and makes it possible for me to spend the majority of my time working in ministry with college students. So thank you!

Buy me books!

Let’s say there is nothing you want to buy from us, and for whatever reason you don’t want to donate to campus ministry, but you still want to send some love my way. Don’t send me cash. Buy me a present!

My Amazon wish list is public, and while there is some “just for fun” stuff on there, the bulk of it consists of books on theology, spirituality, liturgy and scripture. But there is no way I can afford all the books I’d like to read. Help me become a better campus minister, diaconal candidate, husband and father by sending good books my way. I’ll be sure to remember you in my prayers!

Thank you for your support of this blog and my ministry!
